New South Abington Twp. pump station will provide 400 property owners with clean water

S. Abington OKs new pump station

SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. - About 400 property owners in the Abingtons whose private wells were contaminated years ago can soon hook up to a public water supply.

Supervisors on Monday approved Pennsylvania American Water Co.'s land-development plan that allows contractors to replace the existing pump station on Griffin Pond Road with one twice its size.

The new pump station, about 1,500 square feet, will serve as the primary source of water for a 21-mile waterline expected to provide clean water to residents in parts of North Abington, Scott, South Abington and Waverly townships, project manager Daniel Rickard said.

Construction of the waterline is part of an agreement made in June 2011 between the Department of Environmental Protection and industrial park tenants Bostik Inc. and Sandvik Inc.

The two companies were held responsible for contaminating groundwater in those municipalities about seven years ago, and have since provided affected residents with private water-treatment systems.

The upgrade was necessary because the current pump station didn't have the treatment, storage or pumping capabilities necessary "to accommodate the additional load of customers," Mr. Rickard said.

There is no timetable for construction on the pump station, though officials plan to put the project out to bid in late summer or early fall.

The building will feature faux windows and doors, and an asphalt rooftop, so it blends with the other residential homes in the neighborhood.

"This will absolutely benefit those whose wells were contaminated," South Abington Twp. Supervisor Mark Dougherty said.
