Two cited after alleged theft try
MADISON TWP. - A Pike County man and a Wayne County man were cited for trespassing after they were seen trying to take scrap metal from the site of a defunct Lackawanna County trailer park, police said.
Daniel S. Kemery, 29, of Greentown, and David J. Eldred, 28, of Hawley, entered the old site of Kearney Trailer Park 1 in a 1980s pickup truck Thursday at 2:30 p.m., state police at Dunmore said.
George P. Van Brunt Jr., of Madison Twp., spotted them trying to take scrap metal and confronted them. They fled and Mr. Van Brunt called police. A short time later they were spotted and stopped on Interstate 84 near the Mt. Cobb exit.
Student's federal lawsuit settled
SCRANTON - A settlement was filed today in the case of a Blue Mountain School District middle school student who was suspended after creating a parody MySpace account of her principal.
The ACLU-PA filed suit against the district in 2007 after the student was suspended for 10 days, even though the page was created outside of school. It described her principal as a pedophile and sex addict.
After courts ruled in favor of the district in 2008, the ACLU filed a successful appeal of the free speech violation. The student will receive $7,500 in damages and have her record expunged. The ACLU is still seeking attorney fees.
CTC property's auction date set
SCRANTON - The auction of 62 acres of Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County property is set for June 13 at 10 a.m.
The appraised value of the property, which is zoned residential and off Rockwell Avenue, is $725,000. During the center's joint operating committee Thursday night, directors approved details of the auction, including it taking place in the board room, 3201 Rockwell Ave.
Also Thursday night, a $226,459 contract for asbestos abatement was awarded to Power Component Systems Inc., of Annapolis, Md., for the CTC renovation project.
