Scranton business inventory underway
Scranton Tomorrow will conduct a downtown inventory of businesses within the Main Street Scranton footprint in coordination with the University of Scranton Enactus members. The inventory process will take place throughout April. As part of the Main Street designation by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Scranton Tomorrow is required to establish and maintain an inventory of all businesses in the Main Street footprint, which extends from Lackawanna Avenue to Olive Street; Mifflin Avenue to Jefferson Avenue. The goal is to obtain contact information from the 700-plus businesses in the footprint.
Upstate Shredding recognized: Scrap metal recycler Upstate Shredding-Ben Weitsman was named one of the world's leading scrap metal companies by the international publication Platts. The publication also named the company a finalist for its Industry Leadership - Scrap & Recycling as part of its 2013 Global Metals Awards program.
Tourism booklet available: Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau has released its first "Calendar of Events" booklet. The 34-page, full-color brochure is full of events happening in the Endless Mountains through March 31, 2014, and is available at area businesses and brochure racks as well as the visitors bureau office at the top of Mile Hill on Route 6 west of Tunkhannock, or by contacting 836-5431, 800-769-8999 or becky@endles smountains.org.
Supermarkets collect for hunger relief: Customers at Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets donated $587,545 at the checkout to support local hunger relief efforts through the grocers' Bag Hunger campaign, which ran Feb. 24 through March 9.
New deadline for awards nominations: The Northeastern Pennsylvania Nonprofit & Community Assistance Center is accepting applications for its 2013 Community Awards Program, which highlights the programs and projects that positively impact communities in Northeast Pennsylvania. LCCC installs mall kiosk: Luzerne County Community College has established an education kiosk on the second level at the Mall at Steamtown, near the food court. Information is available on credit and noncredit courses, tuition, financial aid, retraining programs, upcoming recruitment activities, special events, career planning and admission procedures.
TFCU featured in article: Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union was featured in an article at DepositAccounts.com about the credit union's money market promo rate and checking account bonus.
Businesses aid cleanup: Several area businesses have made contributions to the Great Pennsylvania Cleanup in Hazleton, including Bonanza Family Restaurant, Burger King in Humbolt Station, Hershey Co., Kentucky Fried Chicken, Sonic, Wendy's and the state Department of Transportation. Black Creek Twp., Hazle Twp., Hazleton, Butler Twp. and West Hazleton will provide street crews to assist PennDOT in the removal of bags.
Donations collected: Rainbow International of Northeast Pennsylvania collected donations for the 10th anniversary of Colon Cancer Awareness Saves Unlimited Adult Lives Day, or CASUAL Day. The shop sold pins and T-shirts.
Hospitals partner: Wayne Memorial Hospital, Geisinger Health System and Evangelical Community Hospital have partnered to form Keystone Accountable Care Organization, one of 106 new accountable care organizations for patients with Medicare.
PMC recognized: Pocono Medical Center was featured on Becker's Hospital Review 2013 annual list of "100 Great Hospitals."
Leadership Lackawanna seeks applications: Leadership Lackawanna is accepting applications for the Core Program class of 2014. The deadline to apply is April 30. The 10-month program fosters the development of community leaders by providing participants with leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills and an enhanced understanding of the issues and topics relevant to the greater Scranton area. Salon seeks moms: Fusion Hair Design in Scranton will hold a Mother's Day Makeover contest, which will reward one Lackawanna County mom who has had a positive impact on the lives of others with a makeover valued at more than $300. Misericordia professors awarded: Two Misericordia University communications professors were awarded the Accolade Film, Television, New Media & Videography 2013 Award of Merit in Disability Issues. Melissa Sgroi, Ed.D., assistant professor and chairwoman of communications, and Dan Kimbrough, M.S., assistant professor, were honored for the 15-minute documentary they produced called "Vote.'' It chronicled how accessibility issues can disenfranchise some voters by inhibiting their entrance to polling places.
Big Brothers Big Sisters gets grant: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lackawanna, Susquehanna, Wayne & Pike County was awarded a $3,000 grant from Darden restaurants in the Scranton area as part of Darden's second annual restaurant community grants program.
New program at Johnson College: Johnson College is recruiting for its newest program, the physical therapist assistant technology program. The program is a full-time, five-semester, day program that consists of general education courses, technical PTA specific courses and three clinical education experiences.
Keystone Associates honored: Keystone Associates Architects, Engineers and Surveyors LLC was honored with gold awards in the masonry and concrete categories for excellence in design and installation from the American Concrete Institute's Central New York Chapter.
FNCB employees donate: First National Community Bank employees donated $250 to Bushkill Relay for Life as part of the bank's Community Caring employee volunteer program.
PMC accredited: Pocono Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in stereotactic breast biopsy as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology.
Misericordia chapter approved: The Misericordia University American Medical Student Association Premedical Chapter was approved at the AMSA's annual convention in Washington, D.C.
Pennypack certified: Pennypack Farm & Education Center received the food alliance certification from the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture.
