ARCHBALD - Broken glass bottles and an old tarp made their way from the banks of the Lackawanna River to a dumpster on Saturday.

The work was part of a final project of Patrick Collins, a student at Lackawanna College. Mr. Collins, his father, Russell Collins, and a team of six or seven other volunteers lifted tires and other trash up the river banks.

"I wanted to impact the community," Patrick Collins said.

Volunteers were scheduled to clean sites throughout the region on Saturday, many as part of the Great NEPA Clean-Up, including a cleanup of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail in Scranton. Along with Mr. Collins' effort in Archbald, about 15 members of the Valley View football team and 18 members of the Eynon Archbald Lions Club picked up litter and spruced up areas throughout the borough, said Karen Rapoch of the Lions Club.

The cleanup was an important one for Patrick Collins, who lives in Scranton but spent two years living in Archbald. With the Canoe-A-Thon, part of the Lackawanna River Corridor Association's RiverFest, scheduled for June 1, he wanted to help prepare the area.

"I want to make sure this place looks good," he said.
