Police Academy to hold foot race

Members of the Lackawanna College Police Academy class 208 will be walking and running for body armor in May.

Class members and academy instructors including Lt. Paul Tomczyk, coordinator, and Rolando Alers, Jordan Joseph, Capt. Robert Moyer and Corey Pavinski will host a "Caring F.O.R. Cops" 5K race/walk May 25 starting in the 100 block of Wyoming Avenue in Scranton.

The event, which will be run/walk rain or shine will benefit Fallen Officers Remembered and will help purchase body armor for officers who don't have the vital equipment. Fallen Officers Remembered's mission is "to bring our law enforcement officers home safely and to better protect our neighborhoods and citizens."

T-shirts will be presented to the first 250 pre-registered athletes. Awards for top male and female finishers in each age division, under 18, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-64, 65-plus, and the overall top three male and female finishers. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Super students

Amanda Fanning of Scranton has been awarded the Alumni Recognition for Student Excellence Award by Penn State's College of Health and Human Development. The award is presented to a senior in each of the college's academic units for outstanding performance, achievement, and contributions within his or her major. Amanda, a human development and family studies major, is a past-president of the HDFS Undergraduate Student Organization, was the THON chairwoman for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and a member of the THON Operations Committee. She is also a member of the Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society. She received a Remmey Family Trustee Scholarship and a Dr. Helen E. Bell Trustee Scholarship. The daughter of Jennifer and William Fanning, Amanda hopes to have a career in the legal field with children and families. ... Jake Stamatis of Tunkhannock has been chosen to serve as fraternity education officer of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity at Susquehanna University. Jake is a senior music performance major at Susquehanna. A 2009 graduate of Tunkhannock High School, he is the son of Paul and Barbara Stamatis. ... Danielle Kazmierczak of Dunmore, vice president; Rachel Tribe of Pittston, treasurer, and Rachel Kashuba of Pittston, were among the students on hand when the Luzerne County Community College chapter of NOW hosted a presentation by Dolly Woody, executive director of the Northeast Pennsylvania affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

High notes

Members of the Abington Business and Professional Association, including, co-chairwomen Diane Calabro, Gerry Carey and Sherry Moore, and President Barry Kaplan, have planned the latest edition of the ABPA's annual Men in Black event for April 17 at Glen Oak Country Club. Also assisting with the event, themed "Light up the Town," are committee members Kristy Ceruti, Tara Mowbray, Dorothy O'Connor and Leah Rudolph. Proceeds benefit Abington's 4th of July fireworks show and Clarks Summit's Christmas lights.
