Tips from social media have helped Dickson City police identify participants in a rash of "gallon smashing" incidents in the borough, sparked by an online video trend.
The videos feature people carrying gallons of milk or other beverages before throwing themselves on the floor and smashing the products, spilling liquid everywhere.
Dickson City has had five reports of gallon smashing in the past month, the most recent at 3 a.m. Sunday in Wegmans. Borough Police Chief William Bilinski said three white males began to smash beer bottles.
On Tuesday, the chief said police identified the participants in the Wegmans incident after posting videos and photos on the department's Facebook page. He did not release their names.
"We're going to speak to the store regarding ⦠prosecution and restitution," he said.
Chief Bilinksi said there were also four incidents at Target earlier in the month. Police also have received tips on who may have participated in those, the chief said.
Suspects could face charges of criminal mischief and may have to pay restitution for damage and time taken to clean up the mess.
