Part of Jefferson Avenue is closed while Scranton police’s Hazardous Device Unit searches a home for materials to make fireworks.
The investigation was sparked when Raymond Jones, 58, 918 Jefferson Ave., came to Regional Hospital sometime between 2:30 and 3 a.m. with injuries to his right hand, according to Capt. Dennis Lukasewicz.
Jones said the injuries occurred during an accidental explosion while he was making “homemade fireworks,” Lukasewicz said.
Around 2 p.m., police with the Hazardous Device Unit went to Jones’ home to clear “his house and garage, looking for additional explosives,” the captain said.
Officers wearing helmets and vests are carrying items out of the house, according to a reporter on the scene. The road is closed as “a measure of extra precaution,” Lukasewicz said.
