Recycled shoes raise money

Pocono Medical Center's Environmental Awareness Council set up red bins to collect shoes through the TerraCycle Shoe Brigade in December. The goal was to recycle old shoes through TerraCycle to help raise money for the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center. It keeps shoes out of landfills and reuses new or gently worn shoes by donating them to the needy in the community. To date, the efforts of the council have resulted in more than $300 being donated to the cancer center.

Federation receives donation: First National Community Bank has donated $3,800 to the Jewish Federation of Greater Wilkes-Barre scholarship program and $1,900 to the United Way of Wyoming Valley as part of its $181,000 Education Improvement Tax Credit commitment for 2012.

Corporation acquires company: Weiler Corp. has acquired Rei Abrasivos, a manufacturer of vitrified and bonded abrasive products for the metalworking and foundry industries, located in Brazil.

Nominations accepted: The Kohl's Department Stores Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program will award more than $425,000 in scholarships and prizes this year. Nominations for kids ages 6 to 18 will be accepted now until March 15 at kohlskids.com. To nominate volunteers, visit kohlskids.com. Nominators must be 21 years or older.

Historical society accepts donation: The Pike County Bar Association presented a check for $600 to the Pike County Historical Society.

Scholarship provided: The Citizens Bank Foundation presented $10,000 to the Ruth Matthews Bourger Women with Children Program at Misericordia University to provide scholarship support to the single mothers enrolled in the program. The donation will provide $1,000 scholarships to 10 women in the program to help offset the cost of their student loans.

Bank recognized: First National Bank was recently named winner of several 2012 Greenwich Excellence in Banking Awards. The bank was recognized as a national winner for Overall Client Satisfaction in both Small Business Banking and Middle Market Banking. Also as a regional winner of the 2012 Greenwich Excellence Awards for Small Business Banking and Middle Market Banking in two categories: Overall Satisfaction in the Northeast and Overall Satisfaction in the Northeast for Treasury Management.

Firm celebrates anniversary: Borton-Lawson, Wilkes-Barre, will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The firm began as a two-man engineering firm and has evolved into a Top 500 firm with 16 stockholders.

Sale complete: Gentex Corp. announced that the sale of its "Visionix" helmet mounted cueing system and the InterSense motion tracking business to Thales has been completed. The new company, Thales Visionix Inc., will operate as a subsidiary of Thales Communications Inc., of Clarksburg, Md.

Dress down day raises money: First National Community Bank raised $800 for area soup kitchens and food pantries through a bank wide "SOUPerbowl Friday" employee dress down day.

Laboratory accredited: Wayne Memorial Hospital announced that its laboratory services, which processed 314,906 specimens in 2012 from more than 30 different facilities, has once again been accredited by the American College of Pathologists. After a rigorous unannounced inspection by CAP inspectors, the hospital's lab received the full two-year certification.

Oxygen masks donated: Firefighters from the Pocono Twp. Fire Company and Dunmore Fire Department received a donated set of pet oxygen masks from Invisible Fence of Northeast PA. This donation is part of Invisible Fence brand's Project Breathe, which was established with the goal of equipping every fire station in America and Canada with pet oxygen masks.
