Wayne County fire was accidental
DAMASCUS TWP. - A fire that destroyed a barn Wednesday in Wayne County has been ruled an accident by state fire marshals.
Firefighters from Equinunk Volunteer Fire Department arrived at Edward Schweighfger's farm at Route 371 and Owl Wood Road in Damascus Twp. at 7:56 p.m. and fought the blaze for hours. The barn and its contents were destroyed, but most of the animals inside were rescued. The fire was contained and a nearby barn was saved.
The investigation found that the fire probably was caused by an overheated extension cord that powered heat lamps used to keep piglets warm.
