Portions of Scranton and Honesdale will have a number of natural gas mains replaced through a UGI Utilities Inc. $71.1 million enhancement project sometime this year.

About 4,910 feet of pipeline in Scranton will be replaced in the 2600-3100 blocks of Cedar Avenue, the 2600-3000 blocks of Colliery Avenue, and the 300 blocks of Sanders Street, Lowery Street, Kane Street, Walsh Street, McDonough Street and Davis Street.

In Honesdale, 3,850 feet will be replaced in the 400-1150 blocks of Main Street.

"These infrastructure projects continue our commitment to ensure our system provides safe, reliable service for our customers, and for the many communities we serve," said UGI President and CEO Robert F. Beard.

The company will replace about 63 miles of cast iron and bare steel mains with high-density plastic or cathodically protected steel, which protects the pipe from erosion, through the program, part of a 30-year, $1.2 billion plan to replace all pipelines made of noncontemporary material.

UGI will notify municipal officials and residents about construction projects in advance. The projects may cause temporary traffic and parking congestion. No specific dates for construction have been announced.
