MOSCOW - Members of North Pocono School Board agreed they want to do the right thing when it comes to a district wide anti-nepotism policy.
They just didn't agree on what the "right thing" means.
Six months after the school board made a split decision to pass a policy against nepotism, the school board's personnel committee met Tuesday to hash out details. However, board members still seemed entrenched in their previous positions.
On one side, board members said no family member of a sitting school board member should be hired. The other wanted the "best" candidate hired, even if the person happens to be a family member of a board member.
"I don't know what's so hard about doing the right thing," board member Gerald Maglio said during a heated discussion, voicing support of the school district hiring family of board members.
"I don't think it's the right thing," said board member Angela Cobb, who opposes the policy. "That's the problem."
School board member Diane Croom's son, daughter-in-law, niece and first-cousin once-removed are employed with the school district.
The previous anti-nepotism policy in the school district allowed family of board members to be hired but required them to sign a form disclosing the relationship.
At the March 13 school board meeting, the board is expected to discuss a detailed anti-nepotism policy drafted by the district's solicitor. District Superintendent Bryan McGraw said he recommended the policy also prohibit hiring of district administration's family.
