DELANO - Authorities have identified a man killed in a violent crash Sunday night as Nathaniel Keller, Philadelphia.

Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David Moylan said Keller, 20, died from cerebral damage due to blunt force trauma as a result of the crash.

Another man inside the 1999 Ford Expedition suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading, by a PennStar helicopter.

State police Trooper Michael Marinchak of the Frackville station is investigating the crash but was not available for comment Monday night.

Keller was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:30 p.m. by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner David Truskowsky, Mahanoy City, who was assisted by Deputy Coroner Andrew Szczyglak, Shenandoah.

The other man was found near the vehicle. He was treated at the scene by Ryan Township EMS personnel and placed aboard the helicopter. Since both northbound lanes of the interstate were shut down, the helicopter landed on the roadway near him.

Marinchak said it has not been determined whether Keller or the injured man was driving at the time of the crash.

Marinchak said the crash occurred about 8:50 p.m. near mile marker 135.1 in Delano Township.

He said the driver was heading north in the left lane when the SUV veered northwest and went off onto the berm of the road.

The SUV then struck an embankment and overturned, coming to a stop on its passenger's side. Both occupants were ejected during the crash, Marinchak said. The injured man was found lying on a rock embankment behind the SUV while Keller was thrown into the left northbound lane of the highway.

Keller was then struck by "multiple vehicles," Marinchak said, adding that neither man was wearing a seat belt.

Due to the severity of Keller's injuries, Moylan said the man was identified by a "very distinctive" red star tattoo on his neck. Moylan did not rule on a manner of death pending the outcome of the police investigation.

The northbound lanes of Interstate 81 were closed for more than four hours and reopened just after 2 a.m. Monday

In addition to Ryan Township EMS, firefighters from Ryan Township, Delano, McAdoo and Quakake assisted at the scene. Northbound traffic was diverted off the interstate at the Delano exit by Rush Township Fire Police while Mahanoy City firefighters and fire police guided northbound traffic onto Route 54 at the Mahanoy City exit.

In addition to troopers from the Frackville station, accident reconstruction expert Trooper John Minalda investigated the crash and the scene was processed by the state police Forensic Services Unit based at Troop L headquarters in Reading.

Marinchak said additional information will be made available as the investigation continues.
