One man was killed Sunday night when he was ejected from a van and subsequently run over by other vehicles on Interstate 81 northbound in Schuylkill County.

The man and another person were in the van that went off the road near mile marker 135 and rolled over, coming to a stop on its passenger side.

The man who was killed apparently was thrown onto the northbound lanes of the interstate and was run over by one or more other vehicles.

The other person - who also was possibly ejected from the vehicle - was found on an embankment behind the van, suffering from life-threatening injuries, according to authorities. A medical helicopter that landed on the northbound lanes of the highway took the person to a trauma center at Reading Hospital for treatment.

The deceased was pronounced dead at the scene of the 8:45 p.m. crash at 9:30 p.m. by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner David Truskowsky, Mahanoy City.

Northbound traffic was diverted off of Interstate 81 at both the Delano and Mahanoy City exits.

Firefighters from Delano, Ryan Township and McAdoo assisted at the scene. Mahanoy City firefighters and fire police along with Hometown fire police assisted with the detour.

A state police accident reconstruction team was also called to the scene. State police at Frackville are heading the investigation.
