75 years ago, seven miners were rescued from a Lehigh Valley Coal Co. mine in Jeanesville, near Hazleton. An eighth miner died in the accident. The men become trapped after a pond was breached from a dynamite blast and water rushed into the mine.
50 years ago, fire destroyed the 82-year-old Forest House and two adjoining buildings in Forest City. Thirty guests of the hotel and five families who lived in the other buildings were displaced. Damage was estimated at $250,000.
25 years ago, Yolanda King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., spoke at Keystone Junior College about the economic conditions in the U.S. and the creation of the national holiday in memory of her father.
10 years ago, the American Heart Association announced that its annual Heart Ball raised $76,000.
