New website, app launched
FirstEnergy Corp. has launched a new mobile website and free smartphone app for the customers of its electric utility companies. The new tools makes it easier for customers to access important information and services related to their electric accounts.
Round up purchases for charity: As part of its charitable giving program, JCP Cares, JC Penney is inviting customers to round up their purchases in February to the nearest whole dollar and donate the difference to benefit Dress for Success Lackawanna and Dress for Success Luzerne, organizations that promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.
Association donates: The Pike County Bar Association officers met with members of the Wayne Pike Adult Literacy Program to present $5,000 to assist the continuation of the adult literacy program. The donation helped WPALP meet the criteria of the 2012 Villaume Foundation grant of $5,000 in matching funds.
New company launched: Pinnacle Commercial Realty Group has opened. The firm will provide professional commercial real estate services including landlord/owner representation, tenant representation, property management and advisory services to clients in Northeast Pennsylvania as well as nationally through its affiliates.
Company supports program: USA Insulation Northeastern Pennsylvania is supporting PPL Electric Utilities' Operation Help program that provides emergency cash grants for families who find it difficult to pay their energy bills because of unemployment, large medical bills or other hardships. The company will contribute $100 of every USA Insulation project generated by billboards all over town completed by March 31 to Operation Help.
Program reinstated: Wayne Memorial Hospital officials announced that Congress has authorized the reinstatement of the Medicare Dependent Hospital program, which is designed to help small rural hospitals who serve a disproportionate number of Medicare patients.
Credit union raises money: P&G Mehoopany Employees Federal Credit Union raised $4,000 from the annual Baskets for Charity Raffle. Each year, employees of the credit union team up and put together a number of gift baskets to raffle off for charity during the Christmas season. The proceeds were received by the Tunkhannock Public Library, the Wyoming County Cultural Center/Dietrich Theater, Seven Loaves Soup Kitchen, Victims Resource Center, Susquehanna & Wyoming Counties American Red Cross, Greater Carbondale YMCA, Blue Chip Farms Animal Refuge, Interfaith Friends, Ronald McDonald House of Scranton and the Tunkhannock Area Transition Program for Special Education.
Storage franchise donates: PODS of Scranton donated seven containers to five local charities, including Toys for Tots, the national charity of PODS. The donation helped save local charities more than $11,800.
Grant awarded: The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program has awarded a $50,000 one-year grant to Maternal and Family Health Services, Wilkes-Barre, to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection of breast cancer. The Pass the Power of Pink breast health program at MFHS will educate the women of Northeast Pennsylvania on the importance of breast health and refer them to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical breast exams in their own communities.
Foundation supports cancer screenings: The Blue Ribbon Foundation of Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania has funded programs that will provide cancer screenings and education to at-risk individuals throughout Northeast Pennsylvania. During 2012, more than $18,000 in foundation funding was awarded to early detection and treatment initiatives, resulting in more than 500 uninsured residents in Lackawanna, Luzerne and Wayne counties being screened for colon, breast and/or cervical cancer.
Support received: Chesapeake Energy recently provided $2,500 to the Tunkhannock Public Library in support of "Masterpiece," its art-themed international beer, wine and food pairing experience.
Donation made: Employees at Wal-Mart Transportation in Tobyhanna recently made a donation to the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute. The group raised funds through the sale of lapel pins and a "wear pink" day.
