CARBONDALE - The Carbondale Area School Board tabled a vote on a new superintendent Monday night, putting off a decision while the specifics of the contract are worked out.
The district had scheduled the meeting with the intention of naming a new leader.
Acting Superintendent David Cerra explained the delay will allow time to review state laws enacted in July, pertaining to contract language. The new law limits contract buyouts and compensation for unused sick days.
Over the next nine days, a "specific, precise and exact contract for the board to review" will be completed, said Mr. Cerra, who also serves as the business manager. The approved contract will also be signed by potential candidates, a move he said would provide transparency for all possible hires.
"This is so there is no question what is being offered and what is to be accepted," he said.
The motion passed 8-0. Board member Joe Caviston was absent.
Mr. Cerra was appointed interim superintendent on July 5, after Dominick Famularo, Ed.D., ended his term June 30, departing with a retirement package worth more than $300,000 - including 684 unused sick days.
The new law limits compensation for unused sick leave and transfer of sick leave from previous jobs to not more than 30 days.
The board could move to hire a superintendent at the next regular meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
"It is anticipated that matter will be addressed at the next meeting," Mr. Cerra said.
