Post office: No mail on Saturday
The U.S. Postal Service said it plans in August to cut back to five-day-a-week deliveries for everything except packages to stem its financial losses.
Congress has voted in the past to bar the idea of eliminating Saturday delivery. The announcement immediately drew protests from some lawmakers.
State courts higher fuel tax
A plan by Gov. Tom Corbett lifting the Oil Company Franchise Tax cap would force oil and gas companies to pay more, and would likely boost gas prices in Pennsylvania by 28.5 cents. That would make Pennsylvania's gas the highest taxed in the nation.
Proposal would aid businesses
Gov. Tom Corbett proposed consolidating economic development programs to offer a single point of contact for businesses looking for financing. He also proposed to reduce business taxes.
Retailers hiring for spring season
Home improvement retailers are ramping up seasonal hiring for spring, their busiest time of the year. Home Depot plans to hire 220 seasonal workers in Northeast Pennsylvania, including 100 workers for its distribution center in Pittston Twp. Lowe's plans to hire 75 at its warehouse in Jenkins Twp.
Scranton parking hike delayed
Scranton City Council delayed a plan to raise parking-meter hours, days and rates after numerous questions and concerns were raised by Scranton's downtown business community and residents.
Camelback eyes Snö Mountain
Camelback Mountain Resort, a Tannersville skiing and water park complex, will consider bidding on Snö Mountain when it is scheduled to be sold at a bankruptcy auction Feb. 28. The Scranton skiing and water park complex filed for Chapter 11 protection in October.
Mohegan eyes Philly project
A subsidiary of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, which owns Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, is trying to expand its portfolio and partner on a casino project in Philadelphia.
McDonald's sales fall again in Asia
McDonald's says a key sales figure dropped again in January as the world's biggest hamburger chain faced ongoing weakness in Japan and sales in China were hurt by a food scare and the timing of a holiday.
The Oak Brook, Ill.-based company said global sales at restaurants open at least 13 months dropped 1.9 percent for the month. The figure is a key metric because it strips out the volatility of newly opened and closed locations.
