A New York man has been arrested for murdering his wife in Wayne County in 2010, District Attorney Janine Edwards announced today.
Robert Jufer, 71, of Hastings-on-Hudson, was taken into custody today by a Westchester County SWAT team without incident, Ms. Edwards said.
Mr. Jufer is charged with one count of criminal homicide for the murder of his wife, June Jufer, 68, at their Wayne County home on White Mills Road in Cherry Ridge Twp. on October 17, 2010.
She died from shotgun wound to her head.
When troopers entered the bedroom of their 238 White Mills Road home, she lay in bed with the covers pulled almost over her head.
A shotgun rested on the floor, pointed at the bed.
Mr. Jufer is expected to appear tomorrow before a New York judge for his extradition hearing.
When state police began their investigation of the shooting, Mr. Jufer told them someone attacked him and rendered him unconscious soon after he returned from a trip to Walmart, located near his home in Texas Twp.
In one account, he told a state trooper the attacker put a plastic bag around his head.
In another account, he said the attacker wrapped a cord or a rope around his neck, and applied pressure until he lost consciousness, state police said.
Troopers hauled out more than 100 guns from the home, including at least six shotguns, 46 rifles and 11 handguns, according to the search warrant.
The case was first taken up by then-Wayne County District Attorney Michael Lehutsky. It is now in the hands of Ms. Edwards, after he lost his re-election bid to her in 2011.
