Wilkes-Barre police are investigating the “suspicious death” of 7-month-old girl who died Jan. 7, according to search warrant documents filed today.

Police say Cecilia Nin was admitted to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township on Jan. 4 and doctors preliminarily determined she was suffering from a skull fracture and numerous fractured ribs. Showing little to no brain activity, Nin was airlifted to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Montour County. She died at the hospital three days later, according to search warrant documents filed.

The next day, the girl’s mother, Kareliz Nin, told investigators she drove the child to the hospital on Jan. 4 because the girl was experiencing seizure-like symptoms. She said the daughter had experienced similar problems in the previous few days, one time prompting her to be treated at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Police asked the mother if the child had fallen, or if anything unusual had happened to her in the past few months. The mother responded no, except the baby falling down while trying to walk, police said. The mother, however, then said the daughter “may have fallen” off the couch one time and hit her head on a marble table, search warrant documents say. When asked if she had personally witnessed that incident, the mother said no, police said.

City police filed five search warrants today in connection with the case, seeking the infant’s medical records from the Geisinger hospitals and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Police also issued a search warrant for records from Luzerne County Children and Youth about Kareliz Nin’s infant daughter and two other children.

Magisterial District Judge Rick Cronauer of Wilkes-Barre approved the search warrants this morning.
Records say Dr. Samuel Land conducted an autopsy of Cecilia Nin on Jan. 9. Results are “pending,” according to the search warrants.

It was not immediately clear if the Montour County Coroner’s Office ruled on a cause and manner of death.

Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn could not immediately be reached for comment.
