Dr. Cassandra Tunis
Dr. Cassandra Tunis, daughter of John and Linda Zagorski of Old Forge, and wife of Justin Tunis, received a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine on June 3.
Dr. Tunis was the valedictorian and class president of Old Forge High School's class of 2004. She earned a bachelor of science in biology and philosophy, cum laude, at the University of Scranton, where she was in the Special Jesuit Liberal Arts and Honors programs. At PCOM, she was chosen for the board of trustees and Mary F.T. Conroy Memorial scholarships.
She is continuing her residency training in family medicine at Geisinger Wyoming Valley.
Dr. Justin Tunis
Dr. Justin Tunis, son of Mark and Jacqueline Tunis of Clarks Summit, and husband of Cassandra Tunis, received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Jefferson Medical College on May 21.
Dr. Tunis graduated from Abington Heights High School in 2004. He earned a bachelor of science in biology, summa cum laude, at the University of Scranton, where he received the Frank O'Hara award, for having the highest grade point average in his college. At Jefferson, he was awarded the Algernon B. Jackson Scholarship. He is continuing his residency training in Family Medicine at Geisinger Wyoming Valley.
Sara Ruane, Ph.D.
Sara Ruane has received her Ph.D. in biology from the College of Staten Island in New York.
The daughter of Dunmore natives Mary Malos Blattberg and Robert Ruane, Dr. Ruane graduated from Brooklyn Technical High. She eaned a degree in biology at University of Massachusetts. She studied the nesting plight of Blanding's turtles whose habitat was interrupted by train tracks in Nebraska for her master's degree in biology from the University of Central Arkansas, and studied reptile evolution and biology under the direction of Dr. Frank Burbrink at the CUNY Graduate Center and College of Staten Island. Her dissertation, "Phylogeography, Phylogenetics, Historical Demography and Morphology of Milksnakes (genus Lampropeltis)," was the culmination of five years of research on the relationships of milksnakes found in the Canada, the U.S., and Central and South America. She has published in several peer-reviewed journals and has received multiple grants for her research.
Dr. Ruane lives in Brooklyn with her husband, Govinda Hancock, and is continuing her research and work in herpetology.
Kristen M. Horan, Psy.D.
Kristen M. Horan, Psy.D., Carbondale, has been awarded a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Argosy University, Tampa, Fla.
A 2002 graduate of Lakeland High School, Dr. Horan earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice from Bloomsburg University in 2006.
After completing her internship at Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, N.Y., Dr. Horan has accepted a post-doctoral position with an independent psychological group in upstate New York.
She is the daughter of Stanley (Skip) and Donna (Scalzo) Horan of Carbondale R.R. Her grandparents are Josephine Horan, the late Stanley Horan, and the late John and Nellie Scalzo, all of Carbondale.
