Throop won't seek reports on landfill
Council OK with DEP study plan
THROOP - The borough will not seek additional reports on the activity of the Keystone Sanitary Landfill from the Department of Environmental Protection.
In a 4-3 vote Monday, council moved not to seek reports dating back to February 2011.
The motion was brought after council President Thomas Lukasewicz mentioned a recent announcement that DEP will conduct a yearlong study of radiation levels in equipment and wastes associated with oil and gas development. He has been outspoken about his concern over the level of oversight the Keystone Sanitary Landfill has received, particularly since it began accepting Marcellus Shale drilling rock waste.
"I'm not saying there's anything there, but it doesn't hurt to look," Mr. Lukasewicz said of the additional reports.
Council members Mark Mazak, Charlene Tomasovitch, John Musewicz and Neil Furiosi all voted against the motion to request more reports. Mr. Lukasewicz, Tony Gangemi and Dave Repchick voted in favor.
"I think a qualified individual should look at it," Mr. Mazak said of his vote.
Mr. Musevicz and Ms. Tomasovitch both stated they were satisfied with the reports the DEP had provided so far.
"I'm not," Mr. Lukasewicz said.
In other business, the board approved a $179,022.43 payment to Hanson Aggregates for a street-paving project last year.
