Honesdale Borough Councilman James Leo Brennan said he has no intention of resigning from office after being convicted of DUI, his second offense since 2002.
On Friday, a Wayne County jury convicted Mr. Brennan, 68, of DUI, a misdemeanor. It's his second DUI conviction since 2002 and fourth alcohol-related offense during the same time.
Reached by phone later Friday, Mr. Brennan said, "I plan to stay on council."
On April 13 at midnight, Mr. Brennan was stopped by Honesdale police for erratic driving. Police records show the vice president of Honesdale council was speeding and jerking his blue Dodge Caliber across double yellow street lines on Willow Avenue, along with turning on the high beam lights "for no apparent reason."
After the jury convicted Mr. Brennan, Judge Raymond L. Hamill then found him guilty of speeding.
Also reached by phone Friday, Honesdale council President F.J. Monaghan described his fellow councilman as a "good friend" and encouraged Mr. Brennan to continue to represent the public.
"James Brennan has been an excellent councilman, and I feel that he should continue to serve," Mr. Monaghan said.
Mr. Brennan is scheduled to be sentenced on April 18.
For his January 2002 DUI arrest, Mr. Brennan was sentenced to six months of probation. He also was arrested in December 2007 for furnishing alcohol to minors at a bar he owned at the time, the Limerick Tavern, 528 Main St. He also was arrested in 2009, police records show, at a fast food restaurant in Texas Twp. Records state he was intoxicated and arguing with employees.
