FALLS TWP. - Two fires in Wyoming County gutted a home and destroyed a warehouse Thursday morning.
Fire crews responded to a fire on Whites Ferry Road when a passer-by saw flames come out of the roof of a home and called it in to the Wyoming County 911 center around 10:35 a.m., Lake Winola First Assistant Fire Chief Gene Dziak said.
No one was in the home at the time of the fire, but two dogs were rescued at the scene, Chief Dziak said. The fire appears to have been caused by an overheated woodburner, he said.
Chief Dziak said frigid weather created some difficulty in establishing a water source. Fire companies from Nicholson, Meshoppen, Triton, Dalton and Factoryville assisted.
No one was injured at the scene. Four residents of the home were displaced by the fire and would likely be staying with family members, the assistant chief said.
Earlier in the day, a fire destroyed a warehouse at a pallet company in Clinton Twp.
Factoryville Fire Chief Brian Gow said an employee of Northern Pallet on Creek Road near Factoryville arrived at work at around 6:45 a.m. to find one of its two warehouses on fire.
Chief Gow said the building was a total loss, but two forklifts inside were not damaged. There were no injuries, Chief Gow said. He said a fire marshal was on the scene later in the day but the cause of the fire was undetermined.
Chief Gow said the fire appeared accidental and the fire marshal determined there was no sign of foul play.
The single-digit weather created some minor issues for firetrucks, but there were no injuries, Chief Gow said.
Chief Dziak echoed the sentiment, noting the earlier fire in Factoryville.
"The weather creates a serious problem for rural firefighters and plays havoc with limited resources."
