Dickson City

Some seniors in the borough will celebrate Valentine's Day with swing, line and ballroom dancing lessons and demonstrations.

The Dickson City Civic Center will hold its inaugural "Senior Valentine Ball" on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with the help of Vince Brust Studios.

"You don't have to dance," said Rita Flannery, the organizer and coordinator of senior programs. "We'd like them to just come out and enjoy the evening. It seems like it's going to be a nice program."

The event is free to Dickson City residents and $5 for nonresidents, but all attendees need a ticket, which can be obtained at the civic center, 935 Albert St.

Jermyn

The modesty of the residents receiving top community service honors this year reinforces the type of people they are.

Volunteer of the Year Robyn Smith, 47, said she was surprised when she learned of her award. She views her extensive work with the Girl Scouts in Jermyn, Mayfield, Montdale, the Lakeland area, Carbondale and Forest City as just "wearing a lot of hats."

Ms. Smith will be honored on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the 10th annual Jermyn events committee awards dinner. For tickets, call 876-1477.

Though Jeanne Bell, 80, who will be honored with the lifetime achievement award, is a charter member of the events committee and Jermyn Community Choir, member of the Jermyn lights committee, a 30-year choral director at the Primitive Methodist Church and a busy grandmother, she couldn't pinpoint why she had been selected.

"I said, 'That's silly,' " she said. "I just help out whenever I can. That's what I do."

"I hope it promotes more volunteerism," she continued, noting that she had made wonderful friends. "When you're 80 - and there are quite a few of us that are 80-ish - it's time for somebody to step in."

South Scranton

Jill Murrin has an idea for showcasing the history of South Scranton. Once she has some pictures in hand, her idea will be easier to frame.

The Elm Street Revitalization Project is now actively collecting photographs for an as-of-now unknown historical project, she said.

She is looking for photographs of historic buildings and events in a timeframe ranging from the early days of the camera until the 1970s.

"(We) haven't fully decided on what were doing. It depends on what photos we get and the quality," said Ms. Murrin, United Neighborhood Centers' Elm Street manager. For more information, email jmurrin@uncnepa.org.

Scott Twp.

The layout for the proposed veterans memorial has not been finalized, but members of the committee say bricks are on sale.

For $50, a resident can purchase a brick on which the name of a veteran is engraved. As of now, the plan is to have the veteran bricks outline a walkway that leads to a bluestone engraved centerpiece near the Joe Terry Civic Center.

Introduced by sewer authority member Stanley Stracham, the memorial will honor all past, present and future township veterans. Committee member Ed Sokoloski has said he believes Scott Twp. is home to at least 500 veterans.

"This has been in the works for a little while, but it's about time we honor all the township veterans," Mr. Stracham said.

So far, the Scott Twp. Democratic club has committed $500 to the project.

All bricks must be ordered by July 15, so the memorial can be completed by Nov. 11. Call 587-3120.

West Scranton

When Karin Foster found out that a friend was going through chemotherapy, a first reaction was, "How can I help?" The next was, "How can the community help?"

"We decided to get together and make it easier," said Ms. Foster, president of the West Scranton Hyde Park Neighborhood Watch said.

On Feb. 23, she and roughly 20 other volunteers will hold a fundraiser for her friend, Jen Collins. Tickets for the event, at Haggerty's Tavern, 421 N. Main Ave., at 7 p.m., are $10 per person.
