TAYLOR - The borough's community center may see a spike in membership, and not only from Taylor residents.
For the first time, out-of-town residents may have the opportunity to use the center's facilities, recreation commission Chairman Chuck McKeel said.
"Times that they are today, with budgets and everything else, we would look at different avenues to raise some revenue and advance the community center a little bit," Mr. McKeel said.
The center has about 96 members, at a rate of $35 each per month. Among other activities, it features basketball, volleyball, a sauna, a steam room, free weights and cardio equipment. The center's projected expenses for the year are $108,078, according to the borough's 2013 budget.
Mr. McKeel said he would support the idea to open the center to nonresidents and expects the issue to be raised during the next recreation commission meeting, scheduled for Wednesday.
Details surrounding what rate nonresidents would pay are not clear and would require discussion among the commission members. The commission meets the third Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the center.
As a recommending body, the commission would take the discussion to borough council, which would be able to vote on making the change during a council meeting.
Council President Kenneth Mickavicz said the idea has been discussed during a council meeting, but ultimately it was tabled.
While raising additional revenue would be a plus, Mr. Mickavicz said the facility itself is not huge. Opening membership to nonresidents could lead to overcrowding, which could bring additional expenses, including for maintenance.
"What are the benefits if you raise another $3,000 and it takes $4,000 to do it?" Mr. Mickavicz asked.
