Jobless rate falls in NEPA

The unemployment rate among residents of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area slipped one-tenth of a percentage point in November to 9.4 percent. The national rate for December remained unchanged from the previous month at 7.8 percent.

Casino slots revenue reported

Mount Airy Casino Resort in Monroe County saw slot machine revenue increase 2.79 percent in 2012 compared to the previous year, while Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Plains Twp. saw revenue fall 0.27 percent.

Happy new year for Wall Street

The "fiscal cliff" compromise was enough to ignite the stock market on Wednesday, the first trading day of the new year. The Dow Jones industrial average careened more than 300 points higher, its biggest gain since December 2011.

Electric bills on the rise

Higher electricity bills started last week for customers of PPL Electric Utilities, which must pay for damage from 2011 storms and other improvements. Combined, the changes result in a 3 percent increase in the monthly bill.

Stores close as holidays end

Several stores at the Mall at Steamtown and Shoppes at Montage saw stores close or planning to close. After the hustle of holidays, retailers rethink locations.

Fatalities down in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania workplace fatalities decreased by 16 percent in 2011, compared to the prior year. Fatal work-related injuries killed 186 people in the state in 2011, down from 221 in 2010.

Another rehab project planned

United Neighborhood Community Development Corp. is seeking $450,000 in gaming funds to renovate an old high school at 311-313 Luzerne Ave. in West Pittston and construct 22 apartments.

Solid Cactus relocating

E-commerce website design company Solid Cactus will move out of its location in the Shavertown section of Kingston Twp. and into its sister company Network Solutions' facility in Drums in March. There will be no jobs lost or name changes in the move.

Auto sales end 2012 strong

Strong U.S. sales in December capped a remarkable year for the auto industry - especially Japanese brands - and 2013 should be even better. Sales of new cars and trucks are expected to total 14.5 million after all carmakers announce their figures.
