75 years ago, New Year's Eve parties: Dinner and dancing at the Hotel Jermyn, $3 a person; Midnight Revue with Ferdic Hamilton Orchestra and "The Happy Five" swing string band at the Elks Club on North Washington Avenue, $5 a person; and the West Side Theater Gala New Year's Eve program with comedian Charles Chase and John Fitz Henry on the organ, 40 cents a person.
50 years ago, Mary Scranton, wife of Gov.-elect William Scranton, was rescued from a chairlift at Elk Mountain Ski Center in Susquehanna County. Mrs. Scranton and 40 other passengers were stranded when the lift got jammed.
25 years ago, Lackawanna County Multi-Purpose Stadium Authority officials announced they would solicit bids for the construction of the $15 million stadium in early February.
10 years ago, Community Medical Center announced its trauma unit would be closed from Jan. 1 to 7 because Dr. Shripathi Holla, the center's primary neurosurgeon, was not working in protest over the soaring malpractice insurance cost in Pennsylvania.
