West Side school likely to reopen
SCRANTON - Students should be able to return to West Scranton Intermediate School on Wednesday, after sewer problems caused the school to close Dec. 20, Superintendent William King said Friday.
Crews working on the gym stabilization project had been pumping grout into the ground when they hit a sewer pipe and filled a 30-foot section of the pipe, Mr. King said. The filled pipe caused sewage to back up into the school on Dec. 20. Students were dismissed early that day and school was canceled the next day before the holiday break began.
The contractor, Hayward Baker, a North American geotechnical construction firm, will likely be liable for damages, Mr. King said.
