75 years ago, about 3,000 people attended the 2nd Ward Independent Republicans Club Christmas party at North Scranton Junior High School. The club also gave out 258 Christmas baskets to needy families.
50 years ago, four-term former Scranton Mayor James Hanlon died a day earlier at his home at age 70. He had also served as director of public safety and administrator of the Hillside Home.
25 years ago, Olyphant Fire Chief William Nefak said a fire the day before at 303-05 Lackawanna Avenue was caused by faulty wiring. Thirteen people were left homeless.
10 years ago, Scranton and its unionized Department of Public Works employees reached an agreement on a new contract. The four-year pact included a raise in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
