Wind the bigger worry despite a white Christmas forecast

It may be a white Christmas in some parts of Northeast Pennsylvania, but the winter weather that began Friday afternoon should not cause many problems for holiday travelers.

"I don't think it's anything, at least in the valley cities, that amounts to anything," said Tom Kines, a meteorologist for AccuWeather. "Maybe across the higher ground there could be a small accumulation at some point."

The majority of this weekend's snow was expected to fall overnight, gradually slowing over the course of the day until tapering off entirely by Sunday afternoon. Only about an inch of total accumulation is expected, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

What might be more of an issue this weekend is the wind, Mr. Kines said.

Wind speed is expected to range between 20 and 30 mph with gusts of up to 40 mph possible, Mr. Kines said.

As for those leaving the area to celebrate the holiday, Mr. Kines said the only areas that may pose travel problems are the northwestern part of the state and the Syracuse, N.Y., area, where lake effect snow is expected to hit this weekend.

The snow may return by Christmas Eve, when a 60 percent chance of precipitation is forecast along with a low temperature of 25 degrees that night.

Christmas Day also has a chance of snow showers, though it was only set at 30 percent on Friday, according to the NWS.

"The big story across the northeast is the wind," Mr. Kines said.
