Two arrested for drugs in raid of South Side home

An undercover drug investigation that began last week with information provided by the Dickson City Police Department ended Tuesday with the raid of a South Side home.

A heroin user himself, Stephen D. Simmons, 39, had been selling the drug for his friend and dealer, Jennifer Sweet, 22, out of the home he shares with his wife, Bernadette Mulgrew, at Rear 535 Hemlock St., according to charges filed by detectives with the Lackawanna County district attorney's office.

After buying heroin from Mr. Simmons in several controlled purchases, investigators raided the South Side home Tuesday and found 53 bags of heroin, three of which were in Mr. Simmons' jacket and the remainder hidden in a cabinet in the basement, according to a criminal complaint.

Mr. Simmons explained to investigators his arrangement with Ms. Sweet, who took responsibility for the heroin found in the basement.

Ms. Sweet also had five Xanax pills in her purse.

Both Mr. Simmons and Ms. Sweet were charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, among related charges. They each were sent to the Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail and $10,000 straight bail, respectively.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Dec. 27.
