Nuclear plant's reactor shut down
SALEM TWP. - A reactor at the PPL Susquehanna nuclear power plant shut down unexpectedly early Sunday, but company officials say the reactor is in safe and stable condition.
Unit 1 is operating safely at full power, but Unit 2 automatically shut down during routine testing of a valve on the unit's main turbine system, according to a statement released by PPL. Operators confirmed all systems responded as expected, and employees are investigating the cause of the shutdown.
"We regularly test and evaluate the condition of plant systems and equipment," said Timothy S. Rausch, PPL Susquehanna senior vice president and chief nuclear officer.
The Susquehanna plant is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. It is operated by PPL Susquehanna LLC, a subsidiary of Allentown-based PPL Corp.
