Holeva bake-off ends on sweet note

They let them eat cake, and cookies and brownies.

More than 50 Dickson City residents ages 3 to 85 entered the Norene Holeva Memorial Bake-Off sponsored by the Dickson City Civic Center.

Winners included cakes, Eleanor Zawacki; pies, Angelina Cochrane; cookies, Nicole Grocki; breads, Arlene Gerrity; and other desserts, Vania Barrenchea. Barbara Kucha took best decorated in the adult division; Louis Mendez, children's division; and Charlotte Yazinski, seniors. Children bakers Maci Swinski, Kiera Ford, Ruby Lennon and Vickie Jones also received honors.

Judges, including Kaley Black, Best Friends Cafe; Amy Gretzula, American Food & Vending @ Lockheed Martin; Dan Holeva; Officer Stacey Lemoncelli of the Dickson City Police Department; Josh McAuliffe of The Times-Tribune; and Bob Smith of Smilers Grill & Bar selected the winners. After the prizes were presented, attendees were treated to a free community social featuring the baked goodies.

Super students

The works of Briana Beck of Dickson City were among those featured when Luzerne County Community College conducted a Commercial Art program exhibit at the College's Schulman Gallery. ... Ashley Wilkes, daughter of Tom and Laurene Wilkes of Archbald, has been awarded the Friends of Brockport Dance Scholarship for her academic achievement. This award recognizes Ashley's potential as a dance major at the College of Brockport. She is a graduate of Valley View High School. ... King's College student Robert Vieira of Old Forge will study at Richmond, the American International University in Florence, Italy, through the American Institute for Foreign Study. A senior majoring in business management, Robert is the son of Rocky and Marianne Vieira. ... Eric Wallis of Carbondale took the first step in becoming a Purdue University Boilermaker by participating in the annual STAR program at Purdue's West Lafayette campus.

High notes

Donna Cadden, Jim Cadden, Monsignor William Feldcamp, Nancy Frick, Posie Granet, Kristin McIntyre, Brian Reilly, Alyson Reilly and Beth Shaffern have been meeting to plan St. Paul's Block Party for Sept. 7-9 on the church grounds in the 1500 block of Penn Avenue in Scranton. A kids' area with inflatable rides; games, variety baskets, raffles, food and refreshments will be available.
