A New York man already serving one sentence in New York was convicted in connection with a 2007 burglary in Pike County after police identified his DNA from a cigarette butt and a bloodstained pillow.

Michael Lake, 46, of Malone Correctional Facility, in Malone, N.Y., pleaded guilty to burglary of a residence in Greene Twp. on Nov. 16, 2007, authorities said.

The burglary was reported after a Dell computer, a check, an engagement ring, $10 in cash and other property were removed from the residence.

A search of the Combined DNA Sample Index, a database that holds DNA records of convicted criminals, provided a match, which led to a warrant for Mr. Lake's DNA.

"This crime was solved through a thorough investigation and determination by state police investigators aided by DNA technology," Pike County District Attorney Raymond Tonkin said. "Without both this crime would have remained unsolved."

Mr. Lake was sentenced to a 42 to 84 month sentence in a state correctional facility and will pay more than $5,000 in fines and restitution for the burglary. His time will be served following the completion of his current sentence in New York.
