Callers gobble up

turkey awards

The Lake Region Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation conducted the 13th Annual Earl Mickel Memorial Youth Turkey Calling Contest at the Greene-Dreher-Sterling Fair.

Participating in the event named in 2008 in memory of their friend, Earl, a publisher and renowned turkey call maker, the young participants were divided into appropriate age groups ranging from 3 years old to 17. Many different types of calls were made available for the youths to practice with and use during the competition. A demonstration of each of the required calls was given by Chapter President Mark Davis.

Rich Barbolish, Shawn Bronson, Carter Davis, Nate Godshall, William Godshall, Bob Jones, Sally Jones, Peter Keating, Ethan Maines, Wade Maines, Ron Motacki, Laura Nebzydowski, Rich Ozark and Hailey Wasman did their best to imitate a turkey’s cluck, a hen yelp, a purr call and their best call when called to the microphone.

Stars in stripes

Army Pvt. Eric M. Peifer has graduated from One Station Unit Training at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga. The training consisted of basic military training and advanced individual training. Pvt. Peifer is the son of Susan Morgan of Scranton, and Donald Peifer of Greentown.

Super students

Audra Nealon of South Abington Twp. was a member of the chorus when Nazareth College Department of Music performed Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah last weekend in Linehan Chapel on the Rochester, N.Y., campus.

High notes

A field of 275 runners took to the streets of Scranton when the Commonwealth Medical College held its most successful “Turkey Trot” to date this month. The event raised $11,448.41 for Friends of the Poor’s annual community Thanksgiving which was served earlier this week. Andrew Healey of Scranton and Grace Doherty of Clarks Summit won the 5K race. Allison Fiorini of Allentown and Paul Sokoloski of Greenfield Twp. won the 10K. Among those joining in for the check presentation to Sister Ann Walsh, I.H.M. , of Friends of the Poor, were students: Richard Bronnenkant, Alex Chop, Liz Helwig, Jessica Porcelan, Victoria Quimpo, Trevor Staub, Jess Williams and Laura Wingert.
