In the military, Sean O'Shea has learned nothing gets done without teamwork.
As the new president of the Scranton School Board, he said he will apply that lesson to leading the board.
Mr. O'Shea, 28, was elected by his fellow directors to the position during the board's reorganization meeting Monday night.
Surrounded by his wife, Christine, and four children, Mr. O'Shea took the oath of office, which was administered by Lackawanna County President Judge Thomas J. Munley. Nathan Barrett was re-elected as vice president.
Mr. O'Shea, elected in 2011, replaces Bob Lesh, who is starting his 16th year on the board and held the presidency for the past two years.
"It's been quite a ride," Mr. Lesh said. "There's never been a dull moment."
Mr. O'Shea, who has served in the Pennsylvania National Guard for nearly 11 years and works as a Scranton Housing Authority security guard, said he wants to bring directors together, using the strengths of each member for the good of the district.
