The live Nativity scene with Mary, Joseph, angels, wise men, baby Jesus and even a donkey brought tears to Helen Evans' eyes Sunday night.
"You know what's so nice about it? The real Christmas spirit is here," she said, smiling.
The Scott Twp. resident took her two grandchildren and a family friend to the Living Christmas Village at Grace Bible Church to remind them what the holiday is all about.
The free event took place Saturday and Sunday at the church on University Drive in Dunmore for the fourth year in a row. It drew more than 800 people for live concerts, cookies, Christmas photos and cheerful puppets putting on a show.
The theme of this year's live village was "A Walk Through Bethlehem." Visitors were given a glimpse into the village where Jesus was born in a manger, with biblical characters making an appearance to tell of Jesus' birth.
"The most important thing is the theme," Ms. Evans said.
After the walking tour families enjoyed cookies and hot cocoa before heading into Santa's workshop for some crafting and a chance to sit on Santa's lap. There were even pony rides for those who wanted to brave the cool temperatures outdoors.
Youth Pastor Michael Butash said the event was a church-wide effort, with numerous volunteers greeting visitors and doling out cookies.
It was a chance for people to come together and celebrate the true meaning of the Christmas season, he said. "We do it for the community; to have a fun time and spread the Christmas spirit."
