DUNMORE - Using the cafeteria walls as a blank canvas, art students at Dunmore High School recently created a new mural that pays tribute to the school and wildlife in the state.

With the school mascot, a buck, and state bird, ruffed grouse, featured as part of the mural that covers three walls in the cafeteria, juniors and seniors in teacher Cristin Hogan's art classes will leave the school having literally left their mark on the campus.

For about a month, 27 students worked one class period at a time, painting bucks, ruffed grouse, frogs, rabbits and other wildlife on the walls.

"We tried to do things that you see in our forest," Mrs. Hogan said.

The opportunity for the mural came after the cafeteria walls received a fresh coat of paint during the summer.

The cafeteria used to have murals in the 1980s, Mrs. Hogan said.

Senior Vivian Cooper's enjoyment of art has convinced her to major in fashion design after graduation. She said the challenge of painting entire walls required her to pay attention to proportions of the deer, flowers and grass that she created.

"You had to back away and make sure it was the right size," Vivian said.

Junior Zach Cicerini said he hopes people visiting the cafeteria will appreciate the work.

"A lot of hard work went into it," he said.
