CARBONDALE — City council Monday approved a budget for the paid firefighter, police and nonuniform pension plans.
The total minimum municipal obligation for 2015 is $307,338.28 — a number Mayor Justin Taylor said the city is happy with. It’s a 5.4 percent increase from 2014’s $291,518.40 MMO.
The minimum municipal obligation is the state-mandated smallest amount that a municipality must contribute to employee pension plans.
Mr. Taylor said the calculations are essentially based on payroll. Each employee must also contribute 5 percent, and the city matches it, he said.
The city’s contribution to the paid firefighters pension fund will increase from $63,881 in 2014 to $81,980 in 2015. The contribution to the police pension fund will drop from $202,527 in 2014 to $201,635 in 2015. For the nonuniform pension fund, the city contribution was $25,110.40 in 2014 and will be $23,723.28 in 2015.
The calculations are based on the Jan. 1, 2013, actuarial valuations as noted in a letter from Joseph W. Duda, president of Duda Actuarial Consulting in Philadelphia, to Thomas Rainey, Carbondale’s finance director.
