Update: Coroner identifies those involved in Scranton shooting
A Scranton man fatally shot his neighbor with a rifle and then killed himself as police converged on him Sunday night.
Someone called 911 about 7:05 p.m. and reported shots fired in the 100 block of Green Place. Police arrived and found one man dead in the street, according to Police Chief Carl Graziano. Soon after, the shooter took his own life.
“It appears to be a neighbor dispute which turned deadly very quickly,” he said.
The names of the men have not been released because their families have not yet been notified, Chief Graziano said. The investigation is ongoing.
Part of Capouse Avenue between Ash Street and Green Place was closed Sunday as police investigated. Officers were stationed throughout the neighborhood. More sat on porches conducting interviews with witnesses.
Nearby, a group of residents made calls and discussed the shooting.
Mary Kay Cleveland, who lives on Capouse Avenue near Green Place, said she heard 10 firework-like sounds then saw a police car race down the street.
Ambulances arrived next.
“Do you need any help? I’m a paramedic,” Mrs. Cleveland, 43, said.
They told her no, but said there was one person dead.
A second “bang” sounded not long after that.
