Penn Mutual gives $50G in storm aid
Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co. is making a donation of $50,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund in an effort to support communities affected by Superstorm Sandy.
Railroad gives $1M: Canadian Pacific has announced a $1 million donation to assist with Superstorm Sandy relief efforts. The donation will include $250,000 to the American Red Cross; $250,000 to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City; and $250,000 to New Jersey Governor Christie's Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.
Working together: Leadership Lackawanna's Tomorrow's Leaders Today program will collaborate with the Arc of Northeastern Pennsylvania on an eight-month service project. The 2012-2013 class will work with the Arc to plan and implement a bowl-a-thon fundraiser.
Partnership announced: The graphics firm Big Fish Design, owned by Kerrie Gilbert of Clarks Summit, and the marketing communications company River Rock Communications, owned by Catherine Bolton of Lake Ariel, have decided to partner. The agency will operate under the name River Rock and will be located in the River Rock building in Jefferson Twp.
Anniversary celebration: Gillinder Glass will celebrate 100 years of business in Port Jervis, N.Y., this month and will open an art and archive gallery on site to mark the anniversary.
Grocers donate: Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets donated $36,710 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to local organizations that support breast cancer research, education and/or awareness. The stores donated 5 cents for every pink reusable shopping bag sold in October and were in partnerships with Giant/Martin's Own Brands, General Mills and Procter & Gamble.
Promotion launched: Weis Markets will launch the second annual Believe in Heroes promotion to benefit Wounded Warrior Project. Weis will try to raise more than its inaugural $100,000 donation, made in 2011. The program will run in all 162 Weis stores through December.
Recertification granted: The Greater Wilkes-Barre Industrial Fund has been recertified by the state Department of Economic and Community Development through June 30.
McDonald House grows: Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center and the Ronald McDonald House of Scranton unveiled the new Ronald McDonald Family Room. The room is a collaborative effort between the Ronald McDonald House of Scranton and Geisinger Health System.
Board holds retreat: The Leadership Pocono board of directors held a retreat at the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center of Pocono Medical Center. The board reviewed progress from last year's retreat and initiated planning for the upcoming year.
Campaign launched: Price Chopper's annual "Check Out Hunger" campaign will run though Dec. 15 and offer shoppers two ways to help support those in need through local food banks and their affiliated kitchens and pantries this winter. "Check Out Hunger" is available at all 130 Price Choppers and will allow shoppers to Round Up Your Change and/or purchase a set-price food package.
Photographers visit: Google's photographers will be in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre in December to get businesses into the new Street View Indoors program. The Street View arm of Google Maps launched a new program to help businesses enhance their Google search presence. The new program, "Google Business Photos," will bring Street View technology inside the businesses. To participate, fill out the online registration form at streetviewindoors.com.
Office relocates: The law firm of Marshall, Parker & Associates, will move its Scranton office to the Scranton Enterprise Center at 201 Lackawanna Ave. The firm is hosting an open house and ribbon cutting on Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Registration is requested by contacting 969-2127 or paelderlaw.com.
Leaders in recycling recognized: The Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority honored those who have excelled in recycling in the past year. Honorees received a certificates of excellence in recycling at the monthly Board of Directors meeting.
Grant presented: PPL Electric Utilities presented $5,000 to Penn's Northeast. The contribution represents a grant from the PPL Blue Ribbon Marketing Partnership Program in support of its four regional marketing efforts.
Teaching lab opens: The new Physician Assistant Teaching Lab adjacent to John J. Passan Hall at Misericordia University welcomed 20 graduate students in the five-year combined Bachelor of Science in medical science and Master of Science in physician assistant studies program in the 10 simulated examination rooms as part of the patient assessment class.
Banquet held: The Pike County Chamber of Commerce held its 18th annual community awards banquet in November at the Best Western Inn at Hunt's Landing in Matamoras. It was hosted in partnership with the service organizations throughout the area. About 200 people attended and 11 nonprofit organizations honored their own and showcased the commitments toward the work that each does in the community.
Restaurant raises money: Dunkin' Donuts of Northeastern Pennsylvania donated $10,500 to support the Children's Miracle Network at Geisinger through a regional "Miracle for Munchkins" in-store fundraiser. It was Dunkin' Donuts' first year partnering with Children's Miracle Network.
Clinic hosted: Wilkes University hosted the 59th annual tax clinic presented by the university's Sidhu School of Business and Leadership and the Northeastern Chapter of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants. The clinic offered technical aid for accountants and professional business advisers to keep abreast of recent developments in the tax structure. The proceeds benefited a scholarship established by the Northeastern Chapter of the PICPA.
Guide assembled: The finishing touches are being put on the Carbondale Technology Transfer Center Annual Report and Business Resource Guide.
